Jonah was angry at God for forgiving his enemies. So God worked through creation to make the point that God has immense compassion. This also made Jonah, in his own words, “angry enough to die.” By comparison, we hear a story of when Jesus was, in his word, “deeply grieved, even to death.” His hour was approaching when, through his death on the cross, God would offer forgiveness to humanity. Sadly, he found himself alone since his closest friends fell asleep in his hour of need, much like Jonah fell asleep while God was extending compassion and grace.
